Begin with large spaces
If staying inside the lines is still difficult, choose a picture with roughly five to eight large areas. Tiny patterns can become tiring quickly.
Choosing by age
Ages 3–4 often enjoy simple pictures with bold lines. Ages 5–6 can try 10–18 medium-sized areas, while older children may enjoy backgrounds and patterns.
- Are the printed lines bold and clear?
- Are any spaces uncomfortably small?
- Do the face, hands, and body shapes look natural?
Let the child choose the colors
There is no need to match real-life colors. Choosing freely usually makes the activity more playful and personal.
