How to Choose the Right Maze for Your Child

A maze can look busy and still be easy. Check the path width, decision points, and dead ends together.

For a first maze

Start with wide paths and no more than four real choices. Once that feels comfortable, move to a maze with eight or more decision points.

A quick age guide

Age labels are only a starting point. A child trying mazes for the first time may enjoy a level below the usual recommendation.

  • Ages 3–4: paths at least 12 mm wide, 2–4 choices, about 3 minutes
  • Ages 5–6: paths 9–12 mm wide, 6–11 choices, about 5–8 minutes
  • Ages 7–8: paths 7–10 mm wide, 10 or more choices, about 8–12 minutes

More walls do not always mean more challenge

A maze with lots of lines may still have one obvious route. Count meaningful branches and dead ends instead of judging by appearance alone.
